Donald Trump spoke at the National Riffle Association’s annual convention on Friday 27 May and his comments along with many other Republican’s were against the gun reforms that are being demanded after the Uvalde, Texas school shooting.
Trump focused on improving the security of the schools across the country instead of enacting anything along the lines of better gun control. Trump insisted that all schools should have only one entrance and fire escapes that are exit-only. Additionally, Trump suggested that the single entrance should be manned by an armed guard at all times. Trump went on to suggest security measures such as reinforced doors for all class rooms which can be barricaded from the inside to prevent entry. In one of the more controversial statements from the speech, Trump suggested that teachers at the school should be allowed to carry firearms stating that, “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”
Moving on, the former president commented on mental health stating that the countries approach towards mental health needs to be improved. “Almost all of these disfigured minds share the same profile,” said Trump, referring to Salvador Ross, the 18-year-old shooter who was killed himself by after action from the authorities during the Uvalde, Texas shooting.
Moving on with his speech, Trump paid tribute by reading out the names of those who were killed during the school shooting but had difficulty pronouncing the names of most of the victims. Social media was quick to criticize Trump on the matter.
However, the most controversial moment of Trump’s speech came right at the end when Trump concluded his speech by dancing to the 1966 song, Hold on, I’m Coming by Sam and Dave. This move was deemed as distasteful and disrespectful by many as Trump has only just finished reading out the names of the deceased only moments prior to the dance.
Social media flooded with tweets and comments criticizing Trump for his suggestions and his dancing alike. Actor Rob Reiner tweeted against Trump’s disrespectful behaviour. Reiner was in shock that Trump was president once and vowed, “NEVER AGAIN.”
